Susan Chenery interview with Heath Ledger

There have, naturally, been many articles written about Heath Ledgers combative relationship with media including one quite righteous piece by Fiona Connolly in the Daily Telegraph. In this Fiona detailed Ledgers past transgressions ensuring readers are well aware of how badly, in her opinion, he'd behaved.

However not once did she mention the often appalling behaviour of certain media and paparazzi.

"The truth was Heath had been rude and offensive, throwing tantrums at every turn during his time in Sydney filming Candy and he had behaved like a brat any time he was in Sydney" wrote Connolly. Really Fiona?!

What she fails to mention is that the director, producer and others on that film set have said how furious they also were with the behaviour of the photographers and that they would have behaved the exact same way as Ledger, only he got to them faster!

In the article Connolly condescendingly says "I never wrote another bad word about Heath ledger, not because he wooed me with his phone call, or because of the anguish in his voice, but because he really did "learn to deal with things a little better".

It's a real shame that certain media and photographers didn't do the same.

Interesting that during the lengthy period that Ledger spent in Perth over Xmas/NY there was no problem with the media at all. In fact Ledger showed immense graciousness and maturity in thanking the WA media for not harassing him.

During a lengthy phone conversation with Ledger, which she details in the article, he was extremely open with her, expressing real regret at how he had handled the media. His comments showed a real maturity and extremely humble attitude.

Susan
Chenery interviewed Ledger late last year for The Australian and didn't seem to have any difficulties with him, quite the opposite.

"Today, Ledger's attitude to the press could not be more different. He is positively affectionate. He gives me several friendly shoulder-rubs in passing after our interview." writes Chenery.

Susan Chenery is a top journalist, a very highly regarded writer. Maybe Ledger was simply responding to her professionalism.

It's a good very read:
