I'm beginning to wish I'd stayed a magazine journo. Amanda Meade in her column, The Diary, in today's Media section of The Australian writes that Robyn Foyster's package as editor-in-chief of The Australian Women's Weekly is 750k!
Things have changed since I was in magazines! Or maybe I'm behind the eight ball. But when I was a journalist the salary was a pittance which was one of the reasons I moved to the business side. Journalists often move to PR for that very reason. Foyster will be moving to the Weekly, which is really a monthly, in June leaving her current role as editor-in-chief of New Idea at Pacific Magazines.
I think it's terrific that Foyster is achieving this high level salary and why not?! Women's Weekly is probably ACP Magazines mosts important title. It's now 74 years old and number one with a circulation of 605,039 and readership of 2,706,000.
Number two, another ACP magazine, Womans Day, has a circulation of 470,128 so Womens Weekly has a substantial lead of 134,911 to its closest competitor.
Number three is Foysters current mag, New Idea, with a circulation of 388,529 and number four is Readers Digest at 352,000.
Readers Digest has a very strong circulation, it's a good read, I always wonder if it would do better in a slightly larger size format?
Anyway, you can be certain that the editor-in-chief at Womens Weekly will be under enormous pressure. Afterall, if the circulation is not maintained, and preferably increased, then ad sales will be affected which is what publishing is all about.
And knowing that this level of salary can be reached will certainly inspire young journalists. The days of having to be married so that you can afford to work at Vogue are, hopefully, well over.
